Sensible Shoes

Sensible Shoes

A child-sized message about love precedes washing their feet, fitting them with shoes, and praying they transform the world for Jesus.

Sensible Shoes as a ministry is the result of the Holy Spirit joining together two hearts and two stories—that of Sharon Garlough Brown and Leslie Mosher. Sharon best tells the story of how they met on her website, though both of their Sensible Shoes stories began well before then. The founder’s story was born from a long-ago kindergarten orientation and leapt all the way to a time of tragedy, grief, and healing. Together they made the Sensible Shoes ministry come to life and gave meaning to times of suffering.

One Village, 100 Pairs

Because it takes time to accumulate 100 gifts for 100 pairs of shoes, leaving first givers waiting months to see their gift given, we invite you to join together with your family, church, or work groups to provide shoes for one village all at the same time.

Buy Locally

All our sensible shoes are purchased locally from the mamas who wait in their little market kiosks hoping for a few sales to provide for their families. Three pair here, six pair there, two pair somewhere else. Once we have 100 pairs, we head off to one village where we love on the children in a variety of ways.

Walk in Love Message

Excited children eagerly follow along as we share songs of worship and a message about walking in love. “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 5:1-2).

Wash Their Feet

Something spiritual happens while washing the feet of these beautiful children and praying for them. And then one mother joins us, and the pastor wants to help too, and the older children wash the feet of the younger children, and soon everyone is walking in love.

Heal Their Wounds

Small fleas the size of a pin head found in the sandy terrain of warm, dry climates burrow between the toes of shoeless children. Multiplying inside the skin and eating away the flesh as it goes, walking becomes extremely painful. Occasionally expert jigger removers join us in ridding the children’s feet of these terrible pests.

Provide Shoes

Simple, plastic shoes are sensible for these children whose playground is mud and dust, whose custom it is to remove shoes before entering the house, and whose nightly chores include scrubbing their shoes with a stiff brush.

Pray for Their Future

Surviving today seldom leaves room for dreaming about the future. We introduce prayers for the future hope of these children—a hope that as the children grow older they become spiritually mature followers of Christ who hold positions of authority and influence in the family, in the church, in the government, and around the world.
