Footsteps

Trace the Apostle Paul’s journey through Greece in the Footsteps of Paul tour. In this opportunity of a lifetime, the pages of Scripture come to life as you step into archaeological sites and imagine what Paul experienced while he was there. Explore the key places Paul visited, both by sea and by land, and experience the Word like never before.

Bring your Bible and come expecting to contribute to the depth and discussion of what is known about this beautiful part of our Christian heritage. Broaden your understanding of one of the oldest and most important geographical areas in biblical history, raise your awareness of what this heritage looks like in the national church today, and awaken your passion for the mission imperative in Greece.

Our itinerary includes the key sites Paul visited in modern Greece plus Ephesus in Turkey. Guests may choose to join the Mainland Only tour or to include the sites reached by sea as well (the Mainland Plus tour). Our tour usually begins by sea for logistic purposes; however, our itinerary may be rearranged to accommodate the two tour segments, the availability of guides and transportation, and the comfort of our guests.

Day 1: Departure (Plus)

Today you embark on the journey of a lifetime. Visit lands overflowing with ancient biblical history and, at the same time, the living presence of God. Bring your walking shoes and prepare to follow in the footsteps of Paul, and to take a few planes, trains, boats, and buses too.

Day 2: Arrival on Samos Island (Plus)

The Mainland Plus tour begins on Samos Island. Through this island, and several others, Paul journeyed toward Jerusalem to celebrate the day of Pentecost after he said farewell to the elders in Ephesus (Acts 20). While nothing to mark Paul’s journey remains on Samos, this beautiful island will serve as our base for the next few days.

Day 3: Samos Island (Plus)

The history of Samos has been marked by some famous personalities, such as the astronomer Aristarchus, the first to argue that the sun was the center of the universe, the philosopher Epicurus, the fable writer Aesop, and the famous mathematician Pythagoras. Explore its history, caves, monasteries, aqueducts, waterfalls, mountains, museums, or beaches on this day of acclimation and rest.

Day 4: Ephesus, Turkey (Plus)

Ferry to Kuşadası, Turkey and walk through the streets of one of the most excavated biblical cities in the world—Ephesus. Tour the third most significant city in the Roman Empire where Paul spent almost 3 years of his life, and where he, Apollos, and Priscilla and Aquilla established a Christian community (Acts 18). Later, John faulted that church for having “lost their first love” (Revelation 2:4). Our tour also includes the Basilica Church of St. John and what is said to be John’s final resting place.

Day 5: Patmos (Plus)

Ferry to Patmos where, in 95 AD, John the Theologian was sent into exile where he remained for 18 months. Tour the fortified monastery and the cave where John is said to have received the visions recorded in the Book of Revelation. Gaze out over the island and consider the way God used his creation to shape the many visions about which John wrote (e.g., Revelation 8:6–9:21).

Day 6: Thessaloniki (All)

Fly to Thessalonica, which will be our base for the next few days, and welcome the Mainland Only tour group. To allow our arriving guests time to acclimate, enjoy a self-guided walking tour of the White Tower, the Rotunda, the Roman agora, Aristotle Square, Saint Paul Orthodox Church, and many other historical and religious sites of your own choosing. Alternatively, hop on a tour bus or rest and relax with Greek coffee and pastry at a waterfront café.

Day 7: Philippi (All)

Drive through modern Kavala (biblical Neapolis) to Philippi, the place where the Apostle Paul is credited for establishing the first European Christian community in 49 AD (Acts 16:6-10). Walk through the former wealthy Roman colony where Paul preached, where he and Silas were imprisoned (Acts 16:16-24), and from where Lydia—the first Greek, the first European, and the first woman—was baptized (Acts 16:11-15).

Day 8: Biblical Thessaloniki (All)

Experience a hostess-guided foot tour of what remains of biblical Thessalonica. Stand at the marble marker where Paul first brought the teachings that led to the birth of the Thessalonica’s Christian community. Visit the monastery later built on that place, walk along the city walls where Paul escaped persecution (Acts 9:25), and see the spring where he likely stopped to drink. Finally, visit the Catacombs of St. John where the new Christian community necessarily met underground following Paul’s escape.

Day 9: Meteora (All)

The Greek word “meteora” means “suspended in the air,” and this phrase aptly describes these remarkable monasteries. Monks of the 14th century sought refuge from the Turkish invasion in the cliffside caves, and then fled higher to build the original wooden shelters later transformed into monasteries. A preservation ark for the 2,000-year-old Christian Orthodox tradition, only 6 of the original 24 monasteries remain homes to a few dozen monks. This UNESCO site is breathtaking and instills a deep sense of awe for solitary life.

Day 10: Paros (All)

Fly to Paros Island where Surprised by Hope ministers At the Table. Explore Ekatontapiliani, an Orthodox church built at the behest of Emperor Constantine’s mother during the 4th century, see what remains of the French Castle and another Orthodox church built in the 13th century, and weave your way through 17th century Old Town via cobblestone alleyways. Covertly prayer walk for the benefit of Surprised by Hope and the people we serve on this unique Cycladic Island.

Day 11: Athens (All)

Ferry to Athens and enjoy the old neighborhoods on a self-guided tour. Plaka, the oldest, rests in the shadow of the Acropolis, is mostly closed to automobile traffic, and boasts quaint shops and restaurants. Monastiraki cradles iconic landmarks including the Metropolitan Orthodox Church, archaeological sites, museums, and a flea market. Syntagma once served as the capital of the newly born Greek Kingdom (1894) and hosts Parliament, several neoclassical buildings, green spaces, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Alternatively, find a café and watch people from all over the world come to experience this ancient city.

Day 12: Corinth (All)

Begin your private tour of Corinth by gazing down at the Isthmus Canal, whose predecessor played a significant role in transforming the area into the immoral city Paul encountered. Walk through the ancient city, stand at the famous Bema seat of judgement (Acts 18:12-17), and gain clarity about the freedom Paul experienced in establishing a Christian community there. Climb the Acrocorinth to the Temple of Aphrodite and examine Paul’s letters about the temple prostitutes, head coverings, and biblical authority.

Day 13: Athens (All)

Explore the Acropolis together. Ascend the steps to the Parthenon and learn about the sacred temple constructed in the 6th century BC. This temple represents the home of one of the 30,000 gods that failed to satisfy the Athenian people. So unsatisfied were they that they erected an alter to the unknown god (Acts 17:23), to whom Paul introduced the Greek Philosophers from the Areopagus (Acts 17). During an afternoon of self-guided activities, tour historic sights, visit museums, walk the old squares, catch a performance, or relax in the National Garden. Spend your final day exploring this rich city filled with biblical history.

Day 14: Departure (All)

Today you return home having experienced the journey of a lifetime in a land overflowing with evidence of God’s living presence. At the same time, you will return with a clearer understanding and greater sense of urgency for the mission imperative in Greece.

Designed to be biblical, experiential, and educational, our Footsteps of Paul tour lacks the qualities of a mission trip that qualify for tax deductibility. However, our time together on Paros may qualify, which means you may personally fund or fundraise for this portion of the trip and receive a tax receipt at the end of the year.
