Trace the Apostle Paul’s journey through Greece and watch the pages of Scripture come to life as you explore the ancient places, diverse cultures, and pivotal events that shaped the earliest Christian movement.
Bring your Bible and come ready to engage deeply as we reflect on this beautiful part of our Christian heritage. Together we will broaden our understanding of one of the most significant settings in biblical history, notice how longstanding spiritual patterns continue to shape everyday life, consider how this heritage is expressed in the national church today, and allow God to awaken your passion for the mission imperative in Greece.

Journey Through Greece
On this journey, each location becomes a setting for discovery, reflection, and deeper understanding. At every site, we will:
- explore the biblical landscape,
- consider Paul’s relationship with each community,
- examine the cultural and pivotal events that shaped their lives, and
- engage the relevant Scripture passages together.
This shared rhythm helps us see the early church not as isolated stories, but as part of God’s unfolding work in a dynamic world—and in our lives today.

Our journey follows the path of the Apostle Paul through key cities where the early church first took shape. Each location invites us to consider the biblical story alongside the cultural realities and pivotal events that influenced the growth of the Christian movement. We will explore each site with intentionality, engaging with Scripture and reflection as we seek to understand both the world Paul navigated and the communities who first received the gospel.

We begin on the island of Samos, mentioned in Acts 20 as a waypoint on Paul’s journey toward Jerusalem for Pentecost. Though Samos was not a major center of early Christianity, its place along Paul’s route allows us to trace the movement of the gospel across the Aegean. This peaceful island serves as our base for the first days of the journey, offering time to reflect on the mission that carried Paul toward the churches he loved.

From Samos, we travel by boat to Ephesus in modern‑day Turkey, one of the most prominent centers of early Christian teaching, and to Patmos, traditionally associated with John’s exile and the writing of the Revelation of God. These locations deepen our understanding of how the gospel spread across the region and how early believers responded to the message of Christ.

Next we fly to Thessalonica, where Paul preached the coming Messiah and encouraged believers facing social and political pressures. From there we explore Philippi, a Roman colony where Paul and Silas were imprisoned and where Lydia became the first recorded European convert to Christianity. Our journey then leads to the soaring monasteries of Meteora, a witness and protector of centuries of Christian devotion.

As we travel to Paros, home to Surprised by Hope, participants explore how ministry takes shape within the distinct patterns of island life—where social support and trust are most often found within longstanding networks rooted in shared historical, national, religious, and cultural identity. Here, participants gain insight into the ministry challenges and opportunities present in this context.

From Paros, we make our way by ferry to Athens, where Paul addressed philosophers at the Areopagus and proclaimed the truth of the “unknown God.” From Athens we explore Corinth, the cosmopolitan port city where Paul lived and taught for eighteen months, navigating a complex blend of cultural, moral, and economic currents referenced in his letters.

Ministry on Paros
Our time on Paros offers a thoughtful window into the ministry context in which Surprised by Hope serves among the Cycladic Islands. While Greece carries a deep and ancient Christian heritage, daily spiritual life today is shaped by a blend of tradition, cultural identity, and the relational dynamics of small‑island communities. Here we come as learners, seeking to understand how faith is lived, expressed, and wrestled with in this setting—and how Surprised by Hope walks with people through the slow, relational rhythms of ordinary life.
During this portion of the journey, participants will:
- Observe the local ministry environment. Gain insight into the patterns of belonging, trust, and spiritual expression that shape life on the island, and consider how these forces both support and complicate personal engagement with faith.
- Meet a few individuals who have longstanding relationships with Surprised by Hope. These gentle, relational interactions provide a glimpse into how ministry unfolds through presence, hospitality, and shared life rather than through programs or events.
- Reflect on how ancient Christian heritage intersects with modern expressions of belief. Explore how Orthodoxy continues to shape identity and community life, and how spiritual curiosity often emerges within trusted relationships rather than formal religious structures.
This time on Paros invites thoughtful discernment about the spiritual realities of Greece today and the importance of patient, relational ministry within this context. It allows the ancient world we have explored throughout the journey to come into conversation with the lived experience of the present, offering clarity, depth, and purpose as we conclude our time together.
Throughout the journey, time is set aside for reflection, Scripture engagement, and meaningful conversation. Our aim is not simply to stand where Paul once stood, but to understand the world he navigated, to see how the Orthodox Church shapes Christian life today, and to recognize the ongoing need for ministry in places like Paros. In this way, the journey invites a deeper grasp of the earliest Christian communities and a clearer recognition of the spiritual realities that shape contemporary life and ministry across the Greek islands.
Preparing for the Journey

When we Travel
This journey is a Scripture‑centered learning experience. Each day has a planned itinerary shaped by ferry schedules, site hours, and travel time, which means we move with purpose to keep the group on track. Within those constraints, we set aside meaningful time for teaching, prayer, and reflective conversation at key locations. Participants are encouraged to bring a Bible, a small notebook, and comfortable walking shoes.
Some sites include uneven terrain, stone pathways, steps, and moderate walking distances. Ferries may involve ramps or moving platforms and steps. Throughout the trip, our focus is on understanding the biblical and historical context and observing the present spiritual landscape, even as we navigate the practical realities associated with travel.
