Itinerary
Journey Through Greece
A Scripture‑Centered Itinerary
This Encounter follows key moments in the story of the early church, inviting us to engage the biblical text within its historical and cultural landscape. Each setting provides space for learning, reflection, and conversation as we trace the movements of Paul and consider the world in which the gospel first took root.

Samos
We begin on the island of Samos, mentioned briefly in Acts 20 as Paul made his way toward Jerusalem for Pentecost. Though not a major center of early Christianity, Samos offers an important geographical link that helps us trace Paul’s movement across the Aegean. These early days give space to orient ourselves, consider the broader arc of Paul’s journeys, and enter the Encounter with attentiveness.
Ephesus
Traveling onward to Ephesus, we step into one of the most significant centers of early Christian teaching. Here the biblical text, archaeological record, and local history converge, allowing us to explore the setting of Paul’s extended ministry, public teaching, and pastoral letters. Ephesus invites us to reflect on the challenges facing early believers as they navigated cultural pressure, spiritual diversity, and the transformative message of Christ.

Patmos
From Ephesus we continue to Patmos, traditionally associated with John’s exile and the writing of Revelation. This island provides a striking contrast to the bustling cities Paul encountered. In this quieter setting, we consider the experience of early Christians living under political tension, and the way Scripture addresses perseverance, hope, and faithfulness in uncertain times.
Thessalonica
Next we fly to Thessalonica, where Paul preached about the Messiah and encouraged a community facing social and political pressures. The city’s layered history helps us understand the concerns reflected in Paul’s letters—steadfastness, holiness, work, witness—as we consider how the gospel first took root in northern Greece.

Philippi
From Thessalonica we travel to Philippi, a Roman colony and the setting of dramatic moments in Acts 16: the conversion of Lydia, the imprisonment of Paul and Silas, and the birth of the first recorded Christian community on European soil. Standing within this landscape allows us to situate these events within their cultural context and reflect on the themes of joy, partnership, and perseverance found in the letter to the Philippians.
Meteora
Our journey then leads us to Meteora, known for its towering rock formations and centuries‑old monasteries. While later than the New Testament period, Meteora offers a window into the long arc of Christian devotion in Greece. Here we consider how followers of Christ across generations sought to live faithfully in their own time and place.

Paros
Arriving on Paros, home to Surprised by Hope, we shift our attention to the present‑day spiritual landscape of the Greek islands. This portion of the Encounter helps us observe how faith, tradition, culture, and daily life intersect in this context. We learn about the rhythms of small‑island communities, the relational nature of trust and belonging, and the ministry realities present within a setting shaped by deep historical continuity and strong local identity.
Athens
From Paros we continue to Athens, where Paul addressed philosophers at the Areopagus and articulated the message of the “unknown God.” Athens invites us to consider how Paul engaged a diverse intellectual world and how the gospel speaks within philosophical, cultural, and pluralistic settings.

Corinth
We conclude in Corinth, another major center of Paul’s ministry. This cosmopolitan port city—marked by cultural complexity, economic tension, and moral questions—provides rich context for reading 1 and 2 Corinthians. As we explore the site, we reflect on the practical challenges of early church life and the pastoral heart behind Paul’s letters.
Each location on this Encounter invites us to see the New Testament within its real historical and cultural landscape. Together, these places form a meaningful pathway for learning, reflection, and shared discovery, helping us trace the movement of the early Christian story across real cities, communities, and daily life. As the itinerary concludes, these settings offer a cohesive and grounded framework for the Encounter ahead.
